This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise talks with Richard Heinberg, author and senior fellow at the Post Carbon Institute who’s written extensively on energy, economic, and ecological issues. The last time he was a guest on this program, he described some of the fundamental problems surrounding our carbon-based economy outlined in his book, The End of Growth. This week we welcome Mr. Heinberg back to the show as we discuss his latest article published in Energy Bulletin titled, What We Are For. In the next half hour, listen as Richard Heinberg gives us his thoughts on how to promote eco-literacy, why empowering women is good for the planet, and what environmentalists can learn from the Occupy Movement.

Richard Heinberg was great…but wrong about at least one critical thing: the solution to the frustration all progressive citizens feel is not to merely go out and protest; it’s to get the private money out of politics by first supporting efforts like the California DISCLOSE Act, AB 1148 which will require the top funders of all political ads to disclose their identity in the ads themselves… second, support Move-to-Amend and other groups pushing for a constitutional amendment that makes it clear that corporations are not people and money is not speech…and finally enact full public financing of campaigns so candidates no longer have to depend on corporations and other special interests groups for their campaign funding. When we do these 3 things, we’ll be well on our way toward restoring a functional democracy, once again able to respond to the needs of its citizens. Conversely, until we do these things, all the progressive causes we care about will continue to be thwarted by these powerful private interests, and we’ll continue spinning our wheels, listening to great radio shows like yours, and wishing things would get better. You can start right now by inviting Trent Lange, President of California Clean Money Campaign (the sponsor of the California DISCLOSE Act, AB 1148) onto your show for an interview. The bill is up for hearings in the Californnia Assembly in early January so there’s no time to lose. Just email me or go to http://www.CAclean.org. (Tell him Craig sent you.)
