Sea Change Radio Co-Hosts Bill Baue (http://www.cchange.net/about/bill-baue/) and Francesca Rheannon (http://www.cchange.net/about/francesca-rheannon/) speak with eco-philosopher Joanna Macy (http://www.joannamacy.net/)about The Great Turning (http://www.joannamacy.net/html/great.html), a concept she helped coin and define. Macy calls The Great Turning “the essential adventure of our time: the shift from the industrial growth society to a life-sustaining civilization.” This is the second in a series of shows on The Great Turning — check out the first show (http://www.cchange.net/2009/09/09/david-korten-on-the-great-turning-from-empire-to-earth-community/) in the series — a conversation with David Korten (http://www.davidkorten.org/).

Joanna Macy is a practicing Buddhist with a doctorate in Systems Theory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_theory). In other words, she’s a walking paradox. This merging of spirit and science perfectly exemplifies the notion of the Great Turning, which Macy believes is happening as we speak, and gathering force. It’s a collective response to the social, ecological, and economic crises unfolding before us that result from systems that are out of balance.

Before Baue could even ask his first question, Macy enthusiastically complimented Sea Change on its name, which aligns with the concept of The Great Turning. She then went on to describe how she didn’t coin the term as much as she acted as a filter for what she calls the “cultural meme” that became The Great Turning — which she considers a revolution as significant as the agricultural or industrial revolution. Macy ascribes primary cause for our current crises to our anthropocentrism, or the belief that humans are the “crown of creation.”

So how does The Great Turning help solve the intertwining crises we face? By reconciling spirit and science, instead of prioritizing one over the other — much as Macy balances Buddhism with systems thinking. Other solutions include reforming the political economy of industrial growth society, for example by re-localizing economies.

Macy concludes with an in-depth description of The Work That Reconnects (http://www.joannamacy.net/html/work.html), a process she devised that not only connects participants with each other and themselves, but also reconnects them to the earth that nurtures their existence.</itunes:summary>

The Great Turning (http://www.thegreatturning.net/). It's a response to the collapses we're witnessing in our ecological, social, and economic systems. Despair is one natural reaction to these turns of events. But hope is another. Hope that the problems prompt us collectively to identify the dysfunction in our systems, and choose to change how we organize our lives. David Korten helped crystallize the idea of The Great Turning in his 2006 book (http://www.davidkorten.org/GTbook) by that name. For an in-depth explanation of the Great Turning, Sea Change Co-Host Bill Baue recently chatted with Korten from his home near Seattle.

Korten discussed the genesis of The Great Turning concept, coined by Joanna Macy (http://www.joannamacy.net/) (who we'll hear from in two weeks on Sea Change.) He credits Riane Eisler's The Chalice and the Blade as the inspiration for the framing of his conceptualization of The Great Turning. He then cites three modern developments that set the stage for The Great Turning: the founding of the United Nations as a global governance body; the first pictures of Earth from space, which allowed humans to see themselves as one people on one planet with one destiny; and the Internet, which weaves the world in a seamless communications web.

Korten also defines the Jungian concept of the "shadow," and how the US must take full responsibility for its national shadow of racism and slavery, Native American genocide, and economic colonialism, among many other things. He says that we must awaken from our "cultural trance" by stepping into a more mature collective consciousness and telling new stories to shape our culture.

The middle break features "The Great Turning," a song written and performed by Lisa and Brett Brumby (http://www.myspace.com/blbrumby). They're among the growing community of people inspired by the concept.</itunes:summary>

Sea Change Radio Co-Host Bill Baue speaks with David Korten (http://www.davidkorten.org/) about his new book, Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth (Why Wall Street Can't Be Fixed and How to Replace It).

David Korten is perhaps best known for When Corporations Rule the World, his 1995 book that arguably set the stage for the 1999 Seattle protests (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Trade_Organization_Ministerial_Conference_of_1999_protest_activity) against globalized capitalism at the World Trade Organization meetings. Flash forward a decade to the fall of 2009, and that very globalized capitalist system experienced a dramatic meltdown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_crisis_of_2007–2009). David Korten mobilized immediately to write a short book analyzing the underpinnings of the breakdown -- and pointing the way toward solutions -- entitled Agenda for a New Economy.</itunes:summary>
