Money doesn’t grow on trees, but if you’re a paper company, trees are definitely how you make your money. Paper production is one of the leading causes of rainforest loss. Nearly 4 billion trees worldwide are cut down each year for paper.
The result of the massive deforestation is felt as loss of habitat for multiple species, erosion, diminished air quality, and, of course, increased global CO2 levels. Fortunately, there are people working to promote better paper practices. Our guest today on Sea Change Radio is Rolf Skar, head of Greenpeace’s forestry campaign. He brings us up to date on the latest Greenpeace campaigns to push paper companies into adopting more sustainable forestry practices. While some companies are embracing the opportunity and partnering with Greenpeace, others are on the defensive, feeling the impact that the digital age has had on the paper industry in general. Trying to get everyone onto the same page, Greenpeace is advocating for policy change to help save the trees.
