John Perry Barlow, Grateful Dead lyricist, co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and environmentalist, died in his sleep this past week at the age of 70 after a lengthy illness. Host Alex Wise had the honor of meeting and interviewing Mr. Barlow for Sea Change Radio a couple of times and this week we pay tribute to him by re-visiting those discussions. Among other things, he talks about the his time with the Grateful Dead, his conservative Wyoming roots, and potential energy solutions for the next generation. Listen now as we remember the man who provided the words to the soundtrack for so many millions of music listeners, fought for civil liberties in the digital age and made the world a far more interesting place.

Who doesn’t need a miracle? As the lyricist for many timeless Grateful Dead classics, as a privacy rights activist, or as the founder of the biofuel company, Algae Systems, John Perry Barlow has used creativity and sheer will to advance a wide array of “miracles.” That is until a devastating illness left him hospitalized for most of 2015. Sea Change Radio host Alex Wise sat down recently with Barlow, who’s still on the mend, along with the CEO of Algae Systems, Matthew Atwood. They discuss the company’s technology which turns waste water into fuel, and the current Indiegogo campaign to raise new capital for Algae Systems. They also delve into Barlow’s relationship with Edward Snowden, his recovery from this illness, and the unfortunate tale of how he missed out on the Grateful Dead’s Fare Thee Well mini-tour.

Host Alex Wise talks with Kreutzmann about the natural resources on the idyllic island of Kaua‘i, where he currently lives and where he has developed a passion for these lush surroundings. We also learn how his hope for a healthier island and planet prompted his civil disobedience to prevent the Hawaii SuperFerry from docking in Nawiliwili Harbor. As a lifelong fan of the band, Wise also asks him about his years with the Grateful Dead. Billy K recalls playing with Mickey, Phil, Bobby and Jerry, talks about his most recent musical project, 7 Walkers, and about how, in the post-Jerry Garcia era, the band’s remaining members feel a little more free to become advocates for causes that most inspire them.

We often hear about efforts to raise the fuel efficiency standards for our nation’s fleet of automobiles but what’s being done to make our trucks and buses burn less gas? This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, is doing something to help tackle this problem. John Boesel is the CEO of CALSTART, a non-profit organization that’s trying to help develop and implement clean, more efficient transportation solutions by advocating for more progressive policies. Boesel and host Alex Wise discuss the barriers to change fuel efficiency standards over the past thirty years, the progress that’s been made over the past four years, what hurdles lie ahead and what lessons we can learn from similar efforts in other countries.
